Any computer which is connected with Internet has risk of getting infected from viruses and vulnerabilities. There are several approaches to security hardening. Although Ubuntu is much more secure that Windows, but still it is better to take some precautions. I have listed some simple tips to harden the security on your Ubuntu machine.

1.Keep softwares updated.
To avoid any security vulnerability make sure that softwares installed on the ubuntu machine are at the latest stable release. There could be the couple of ways to get updates of software on Ubuntu, but the most commonly used method is to use apt-get to grab the updates of packages supported by Ubuntu. Run below command to get updates of packages in Ubuntu.

sudo apt-get update

Also make sure that the softwares that you are installing on your Ubuntu are from trusted vendors only. You can also enable automatic security updates on your Ubuntu. For enabling automatic security updates, go to System -> Administration -> software sources. Open up the “Updates” tab and select “Automatic updates”, also select “Install security updates without confirmation”.

2. Firewall.
In Ubuntu all ports are blocked by default and you will have to open the ports which you need on your machine. For this purpose, you can get help of firestarter. Firestarter is a graphical tool of Ubuntu which helps you easily modify the firewall rules. You can launch firestarter from Application menu of your Ubuntu machine.

3. Avoid using root as user.
By default Ubuntu has root user disabled for security reasons. By working as non root user, you can avoid so many mistakes. Modifications made by root user are often unrecoverable and any wrong command executed from root user can really put you in problem.

4. Default Settings.
Be careful whenever you are going to change the default settings of your Ubuntu machine particularly network settings. Make sure that you have not allowed the remote logins to your Ubuntu machine.

5. Securing the web browsers.
Most of the web sites are flash and Java script based now a days. To overcome any issues of security which you may face from web browser, make sure that you have denied all cookies and added trusted sites in your browser’s settings. There could also be some other security measures which may vary from browser to browser.

There is no end to security measures. Following above guidelines will help you to secure your Ubuntu machine to much extent. Enjoy!

While Evolution is a useful email client for Gnome desktop, it is just not as extensible and flexible as Thunderbird. For those who are facing unpleasant incidents with Evolution and wish to migrate to Thunderbird, here is how you can do so in Ubuntu.

Preparing your Thunderbird:
First of all, if you have not installed Thunderbird, in your terminal,
type:
sudo apt-get install thunderbird

Open your Thunderbird (Applications-> Internet -> Mozilla Thunderbird).

It will first prompt you to import setting, select Don’t import anything and click Next.

It will then ask you to setup your email account. Go ahead and set up your email account.

Migrate local mail from Evolution

First, we will migrate the Evolution mails that are stored locally in your hard disk.

Open up two Nautilus windows (if you like, you can open two tabs instead of two windows). Press Ctrl + H to reveal the hidden folders. In one window, navigate to the .mozilla-thunderbird folder. You should see a folder with name similar to i7bqvbzk.default. Click on that folder, followed by Mail and Local Folders. You should see some files like Inbox, Trash, Unsent Message etc.

In the second window, navigate to .evolution -> mail -> local folder. Similarly, you will find files such as Inbox, Outbox, Sent, Trash etc.

Now copy the five files Inbox, Outbox, Drafts, Templates, Sent from the Evolution folder to the Thunderbird folder. If it prompts you whether to replace the existing files, click Replace All.
If you have used any subfolders in your Evolution, you should see a folder with a .sbd extension (such as #evolution.sbd). In your Thunderbird folder, create a similar folder with the same name. Back to your Evolution folder, copy and paste all the files in the subfolder that don’t have a file extension to the Thunderbird subfolder.

That’s it. Restart your Thunderbird. You should see all your Evolution mails imported over.

If you have a WAV file that you want to convert to an MP3, it’s possible to do so quite easily and simply on a Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx system. You just need two software packages: the Ubuntu Restricted Extras packages, and the GNOME Sound Converter application. Here’s how to install them.

First, you’ll need to install the MP3 codec in the Ubuntu Restricted Extras package (note that you should only install this package if it is legal to do so in your country or residence). Ubuntu by default doesn’t include an MP3 codec due to licensing issues. However, it’s quite simple to install the Ubuntu Restricted Extras package, which contains the codec. To do so, open up a Terminal window and type this command:

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

Enter your password to authenticate, and apt-get will download and install the Ubuntu Restricted Extras packages for you.

Next, you’ll need to install the Sound Converter program. Return to your Terminal window and type this command:

sudo apt-get install soundconverter

After you enter your password to authenticate, apt-get will download and install SoundConverter and its necessary dependencies. After the installation is complete, you can run SoundConverter by going to the Applications menu, to the Sound & Video category, and clicking on the icon for SoundConverter. Once the program has launched, go to the Edit menu, and to the Options item. From there you can set the kind of output you want the program to produce (OGG files, MP3 files, or AAC files), as well as the destination folder for the converted files. Once you’ve selected your preferences, hit the Close button, and then Add Files on the program’s main toolbar to choose the files you want to convert.

Here is a method for all Debian-based distros :
1. Remove all the packages from the installed version
Go to Synaptic or your package manager and mark all the openoffice.org packages installed to be removed (there is the string ubuntu in their version number). This is mandatory for your first upgrade of the distro delivered OOo version.
Note: don’t use the Ubuntu Software Center to remove OOo because it seems that some packages are left and conflict with the install with official debs.
Restart The System.
2. Download the tarball (.tar.gz file) from the official OOo web site
See here : http://download.openoffice.org/other.html. Select the Linux DEB version!
OR Download From My Account: CLICK

3. Extract the tarball in your home directory (or any other directory you want)
Either do that with your file browser and your archive manager (usually available in the context menu) or open a terminal (you should be directly in your home directory) and :

:~$tar -vxzf filename

4. Install the created .debs
:~$cd OOo_inst_folder/DEBS
:~$sudo dpkg -i *.deb

5.Update the Applications menu

Go to the desktop integration subfolder.

:~$cd desktop-integration

6.Run again the previous installation command.

:~$sudo dpkg -i *.deb

OpenOffice3.3 installed
